This page from the Company Morning Reports book for the 7th Indiana Infantry, Company F, shows that on August 4, 1863 Samuel W. Van Nuys was promoted to Captain and placed on the General’s staff as Acting Adjutant General of the 4th U.S. Colored Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 3 Division, 18th Army Corps. This original record book is housed at the Franklin Branch of the Johnson County Public Library.
