The courthouse has suffered numerous fires since 1854, the most recent in 2009 at the end of a major exterior rehabilitation. The cupola and roof system was heavily damaged as millions of gallons of water soaked the inferno. Major repairs followed and the courthouse reopened for public business in 2011.
