Public Land Survey System (PLSS)

The Public Land Survey System was developed with the grid pattern of townships and sections. This framework organized land in the state into measurable and locatable areas. This survey method divided Indiana into a grid of six-mile-square townships, further subdivided into 36 one-mile-square sections, establishing property boundaries and descriptions still used today. | Source: Wilkerson, Chandler.
