Child Laborers

This 1908 photograph shows boys and young men waiting in line at Kingan and Company for their pay. Lewis Wickes Hine, a sociologist and photographer, captured the image as part of his project to expose the harm of child labor. Factories hired children because they were easier to control than adult workers and were paid lower wages. Because they were small, children could also do some tasks that adult workers could not. | Creator: Lewis Wickes Hine | Date: 1908 | Source: National Child Labor Committee Collection, Library of Congress, Prints and Photographs Division.
