Women Turners

Women were not allowed to become official members. They created Damenvereins, auxiliary groups, to support the men and participate in their own exercise classes. In the picture is a large class of women working through an exercise routine. Women’s participation in the movement would enable them to become some of the first physical education teachers in the United States. | Source: Bass Photo Co Collection, Indiana Historical Society
