Original Facade

At the entrance, there are Latin inscriptions carved on either side of the front door that say “MENS SANA IN CORPORE SANO” and “DUM VIVIMUS VIVAMUS.” These respectively translate to “a healthy mind in a healthy body” and “while we live, let us live.” There were German inscriptions above the entrance and on the shields, but they were removed due to anti-German sentiments from WWI. “Turnverein” is all that remains in German today. | Source: Bass Photo Co Collection, Indiana Historical Society
