The organization served as a resource for black families moving to Indiana after the Civil War (1861-1865). The organization provided food, clothing, and medical treatments. In 1911, charity opened a hospital for the Black community. The Sisters also formed a home for the elderly and a women’s improvement club. Clubs allowed black women to have autonomy and participate in the social gospel movement.","sponsor":null,"accessinfo":"","lede":"","website":"","related_resources":["“Grand Body Of The Sisters Of Charity - Encyclopedia of Indianapolis.” Accessed April 24, 2025. https://indyencyclopedia.org/grand-body-of-the-sisters-of-charity/.<br />","“Indiana Medical History Museum - Part 4: The Struggle for Adequate Healthcare for African Americans in Indianapolis-1906-1925 ‘Sisters of Charity.’” Accessed April 28, 2025. https://imhm.org/blog/9369033.<br />","Devadasan, Neil. “Grand Body Of The Sisters Of Charity.” Encyclopedia of Indianapolis, December 15, 2022. https://indyencyclopedia.org/grand-body-of-the-sisters-of-charity/.<br />"],"factoids":[],"files":{"https://discoverindianahistory.org.curatescape7.reclaim.hosting/files/fullsize/86052366d0f24255ece573c09bde8f18.jpg":{"id":3403,"mime-type":"image/jpeg","title":"Hospital 1911","description":"Hospital funded by the Grand Body of Sisters of Charity  | Image from the Encyclopedia of Indianapolis","thumbnail":"https://discoverindianahistory.org.curatescape7.reclaim.hosting/files/square_thumbnails/86052366d0f24255ece573c09bde8f18.jpg"}}}
