During this time, the city changed from a small frontier town into Indiana’s political and business center. The tour shows how government, businesses, churches, local groups, and city services helped shape early Indianapolis. There are eight stops close together in the center of downtown, each showing a different part of public life. People on the tour will learn about the layers of history in a city shaped by planning, trial and error, and shared goals. Indianapolis was planned in 1821 with care and meaning: a central circle, wide streets, and open public areas meant to show ideas like civic pride and smart leadership. But everyday life in the city’s first 70 years was more complicated. People had to control rivers, organize food supplies, and create new social groups. Public buildings were built and torn down, groups came and went, and natural spaces were covered by streets and buildings. This tour asks people to think about how early residents faced these problems, changed the land around them, and helped build the city we see now. It shows not just the old buildings and spaces, but also the choices, values, and struggles that shaped 1800s Indianapolis.</p>","postscript_text":"","tour_img":"https://discoverindianahistory.org.curatescape7.reclaim.hosting/files/fullsize/899a4a6b925f3a120eb044d357163176.jpg","items":[{"id":687,"title":"Washington & Capitol Streets","latitude":39.7673434000000014520992408506572246551513671875,"longitude":-86.16151089999999612700776197016239166259765625,"thumbnail":"https://discoverindianahistory.org.curatescape7.reclaim.hosting/files/square_thumbnails/899a4a6b925f3a120eb044d357163176.jpg","fullsize":"https://discoverindianahistory.org.curatescape7.reclaim.hosting/files/fullsize/899a4a6b925f3a120eb044d357163176.jpg","subtitle":"Commerce and Business in the City","address":null,"custom":{"subtitle":null,"text":null}},{"id":688,"title":"The Bates House Hotel Site","latitude":39.7680332999999990306605468504130840301513671875,"longitude":-86.1599762999999967405528877861797809600830078125,"thumbnail":"https://discoverindianahistory.org.curatescape7.reclaim.hosting/files/square_thumbnails/30bbf7b512896af5d8283a31af09b91f.jpg","fullsize":"https://discoverindianahistory.org.curatescape7.reclaim.hosting/files/fullsize/30bbf7b512896af5d8283a31af09b91f.jpg","subtitle":"Famous Visitors & Politics","address":null,"custom":{"subtitle":null,"text":null}},{"id":689,"title":"Early Indianapolis City Market","latitude":39.768806200000000217187334783375263214111328125,"longitude":-86.153450800000001663647708483040332794189453125,"thumbnail":"https://discoverindianahistory.org.curatescape7.reclaim.hosting/files/square_thumbnails/be87a37cb0636513e01a09ce818de645.jpg","fullsize":"https://discoverindianahistory.org.curatescape7.reclaim.hosting/files/fullsize/be87a37cb0636513e01a09ce818de645.jpg","subtitle":"Food, Trade, & Local Business","address":null,"custom":{"subtitle":null,"text":null}},{"id":690,"title":"The Odd Fellows Grand Lodge","latitude":39.767375700000002325396053493022918701171875,"longitude":-86.1559907000000038124198908917605876922607421875,"thumbnail":"https://discoverindianahistory.org.curatescape7.reclaim.hosting/files/square_thumbnails/dd2d279fbd301c2ca94857b5ac014722.jpg","fullsize":"https://discoverindianahistory.org.curatescape7.reclaim.hosting/files/fullsize/dd2d279fbd301c2ca94857b5ac014722.jpg","subtitle":"Social Life & Fraternal Orders","address":null,"custom":{"subtitle":null,"text":null}},{"id":691,"title":"Christ Church Cathedral","latitude":39.7692957000000006928530638106167316436767578125,"longitude":-86.15763010000000576837919652462005615234375,"thumbnail":"https://discoverindianahistory.org.curatescape7.reclaim.hosting/files/square_thumbnails/8dae141fb4936e668640fdc335510679.jpg","fullsize":"https://discoverindianahistory.org.curatescape7.reclaim.hosting/files/fullsize/8dae141fb4936e668640fdc335510679.jpg","subtitle":"Religion & Community","address":null,"custom":{"subtitle":null,"text":null}},{"id":693,"title":"Old Monument Circle","latitude":39.768521800000002031083567999303340911865234375,"longitude":-86.15789069999999583160388283431529998779296875,"thumbnail":"https://discoverindianahistory.org.curatescape7.reclaim.hosting/files/square_thumbnails/e078f3f0f03d7cf716b1119090e790dd.jpg","fullsize":"https://discoverindianahistory.org.curatescape7.reclaim.hosting/files/fullsize/e078f3f0f03d7cf716b1119090e790dd.jpg","subtitle":"The Center of Early City Life","address":null,"custom":{"subtitle":null,"text":null}},{"id":694,"title":"Pogue’s Run","latitude":39.76696259999999938372639007866382598876953125,"longitude":-86.170722799999992957964423112571239471435546875,"thumbnail":"https://discoverindianahistory.org.curatescape7.reclaim.hosting/files/square_thumbnails/488d3e14dee88ba28bc08bea9b41dcab.jpg","fullsize":"https://discoverindianahistory.org.curatescape7.reclaim.hosting/files/fullsize/488d3e14dee88ba28bc08bea9b41dcab.jpg","subtitle":"Challenges of Early Infrastructure","address":null,"custom":{"subtitle":null,"text":null}}]}
