One of the well-known alumni of the Union Literary Institute was Hiram R. Revels, the first African American elected to the United States Congress, representing Mississippi. Along with his political service, Revels was an ordained minister in the African Methodist Episcopal Church and appointed the first president of what today is Alcorn State University.
